Traditional “dieting” – is your diet making you fatter over time?
Your body makes certain adaptations while you “diet” and when you have a big energy gap, let’s say when you consume 800-1000 calories less than your daily energy expenditure (so if you burn 2000 calories a day but only take in 1000) your body activates a self defence system where it goes into a fat store mode and actively slows down your metabolism. This is far from ideal.
If you think about it, this means your body/metabolism is running efficiently. This may sound like a good thing, but it isn’t ideal when it comes to weight loss and turning your body into a fat burning machine. Essentially you want to be as metabolically inefficient as possible. This means consuming as many calories as possible while still maintaining body composition (not putting on fat).
The best way to do this is to “diet” on as many calories as possible. Our sports nutritionists do not believe in fad diets, but we do understand that particular lifestyle choices, (like vegan, vego, paleo or organic) can be very effective for some people. Whatever the diet is, if it’s working for you – awesome, continue to follow it.

- Protein: Proteins are our building blocks for muscle
- Fibre: Fibre is something that is overlooked a lot when people think about nutrition plans. Fibre helps to improve gastrointestinal health and actively slows the digestion down to keep you fuller for longer while also increasing the rate of which your body has to work (thermogenesis) to digest the high fibre food you are eating.
- Fats: Moderate fats are essential for hormone production.
- Carbohydrates: People are so afraid of carbs but they are actually fat mobilisers. The good thing with having a high-fibre diet is that they are high in carbohydrates, which gives you lots of energy ready for when you train. This helps you maximise and get the most out of your workouts.
- Water: We all know that water is good for us but very few of us drink enough. Again, everyone is different but you need to be drinking at least 3 litres of water every day! This is especially true for people that train frequently.
